Lebanese protest Israeli energy exploration to the UN

Lebanese Foreign Minister Ali Shami sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon late Tuesday, requesting that he "prevent Israel from exploiting Lebanon's oil and maritime wealth." Israel recently uncovered vast reserves of natural gas in the Leviathan and Tamar offshore fields underneath the Mediterranean Sea about 80 miles northwest of Haifa, and Lebanon almost immediately accused the Jewish State of drilling in fields that extend into Lebanon, which Israel immediately denied. The Leviathan field is estimated to hold nearly $45 billion worth of natural gas and according to Noble Energy Inc., which owns 39.66% of the prospect, it “has the potential to position Israel as a natural gas- exporting nation.”
