Turkish army holds joint drills with Syrian troops
In a further sign that Turkey is distancing itself from Israel and the West, the Turkish Army is currently hosting a delegation of Syrian troops for a joint training exercise which started on Tuesday and runs through Thursday. The Turkish Army issued a statement that the exercise was designed to "boost cooperation and confidence between the land forces of the two countries, and raise border units' level of training and ability to work together." Turkey’s once close relationship with Israel has deteriorated in recent years as the Islamist AKP Party of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has sought closer ties with the Muslim world. For decades, the Turkish Army has taken the lead in developing relations with Israel, while also serving as the guarantor of the secular, democratic government, but both roles now seem to be on the wane.
